President's mandate


Mandate of the President of the Conference of States Parties to the Arms Trade Treaty

  • Preside over the intersessional period of the Arms Trade Treaty (ATT), from the close of the Conference of States Parties (CSP) at which the President assumes office until the close of the subsequent CSP.

  • Prepare and preside over the Conference of States Parties, including review conferences where applicable, in cooperation with the ATT Secretariat.

  • Oversee and guide the preparatory process, including convening and chairing informal preparatory meetings ahead of the CSP.

  • Facilitate discussions and promote agreement among States Parties on substantive and procedural matters.

  • Appoint facilitators and Chairs of ATT Working Groups for the intersessional period.

  • Coordinate and oversee the work of the ATT Working Groups and other subsidiary bodies, and report on their activities to the CSP.

  • Engage with States Parties, signatory States and other stakeholders, including international and regional organizations and civil society, in support of the effective implementation and universalization of the Treaty.

  • Represent the ATT and issue statements, as appropriate, on behalf of the Presidency to promote the objectives of the Treaty.

  • Support the implementation of decisions adopted by the Conference of States Parties and report on progress.

  • Work in close cooperation with the ATT Secretariat, which provides administrative and technical support to the Conference and its President.

  • Encourage timely and adequate financial contributions to the ATT budget to ensure the functioning of the Secretariat and the organization of meetings.

States Parties to the Arms Trade Treaty (ATT) elect a President every year during the Conference of States Parties (CSP) to preside over the CSP the following year, including the preparatory process.
